Week #2-Introduction to the Internet and issues in Media and Technology

Introduction to the Internet and issues in Media and Technology

The Internet and the World Wide Web, Copyright laws and Internet search techniques.

It’s week two of EDET class. Bring on the learning and don’t forget the challenges...

The tasks for this week was:
πŸ˜‚To differentiate between what is Netiquette, the internet and world wide web.
πŸ˜‚ To discuss the meaning and difference between Digital native and Digital immigrant.
πŸ˜‚To differentiate between what is and how to use google search, advanced search and bookmarking.
πŸ˜‚To identify and know the creative commons types of licenses.

Let the Learning Begin.....

The Class was placed into groups and we had to come up with  5 rules for the classroom avoiding the use of words such as ‘Always’, ‘Never’, ‘Don’t’, etc. If such words are used we had to make the rule specific and not too vague.
My group presented our 5 rules and every other group also. I saw creativity come to life in the presentations of the different groups and their rules.

Right after, every group had to present different words and give their definitions and examples.

  • Netiquette when it comes to using the internet.

  • What is the internet and world wide web.

  • Digital Natives vs Digital Immigrants.
DN is a person born or brought up during the age of digital technology and so familiar with computers and the Internet from an early age.

DI is a person born or brought up before the widespread use of digital technology.

  • How to go about using google search, advanced search and even to bookmark a page with information you would like to revisit in the near or even far future.

  • The different types of licenses used.

Remember when I said bring on the challenge, HOLD UP

let me take that back.

Throughout the session I had a few hi-cups but one out of the few appeared like the hard days in Egypt when there was no food. Who ever thought that writing 5 simple classroom rules would be so difficult without using the words ‘always, don’t and never’. It was like trying to find a needle in a hay stack but my group conquered like bosses and we did it; our five rules were accomplished.
I’ve learnt so much from this class. Honestly, I never knew that even while using the internet you had to have netiquette much less google having an advanced search option. Makes me feel like a digital immigrant born in a digital native era. Let me not forget bookmarking which is so handy now in locating pages or even websites that had me lighting candle to find them before.
All this information can definitely help in the advancement of not only me but my students in terms of tips in using the internet and researching information.

  • Thumbs up for class this week. I feel much more like a Tech Queen.

Stay tuned for more blogs!!!!!!!
