Week # 8 - Excel (Spreadsheets)

The World of Cells

Hi there my readers. Week 7 & 8 seemed to be my 'boss' weeks. I was just relaxing doing my work with ease. I felt like Virgin Atlantic Airlines just soaring the open sky.

Let me give you all the details.

We had a different teacher this week. First time in history for EDET class. In walks Mr. Jason Fagan ready to teach the lesson in his full army suit. His garment will let you mistake him for a strict teacher but he was cool and collective. He introduced  himself and gave us the first tasks to complete.
He said, "Open your emails and google drives and proceed to the shared files and open the document marked Excel....". He then instructed us to go into our emails and list letters A to M, look at the spreadsheet and correctly label the spreadsheet in your emails and send the answers to his email (jasonclifftonfagan@gmail.com).

TASKS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!
➔ Open your email and google drive.
➜  In google drive access the shared file in the secondary TVET folder, 9.1
➔ In email, list the letter A to M and correctly label the spreadsheet 9.1.
➔ Send the completed answers to teacher Fagan's email for him to rectify.
➔ Open a new excel sheet and follow the instructions carefully from the teacher.
➔ Complete a 2 Grade book in Excel following a specific guide.

Let's continue...

Of  course the first task was easy. The class opened their google drive and emails. We complete the Diagram of the excel worksheet and submitted our answer to the facilitator for the day to check if the answers were correct.

Class continued with the facilitator instructing us to go to excel and open a new sheet. He guided us in what to complete in the worksheet step by step and the class followed keenly.

Completed worksheet by instruction
First we wrote our  individuals name in the first cell (A-1). Then we highlighted columns A-E row 1 and merge the cells to make one cell and then centered our names.
After such easy instructions we then listed number 1-6 from row 2 to 7 in column A, then we listed again colors of our choice in column B rows 2 to 7 and then finally from row 2 to 7 column C we listed places of our choice. As we entered names we had to adjust the cells so that the entire word will be shown.
Teacher Fagan then asked us to highlight the cells  and columns A - E and 1 - 7 and place an all round boarder so that the entire selected area will have a boarder.

That was so easy, a ride in the park or more like eating a good plate of food.

It was time to create a grade book using excel which included the average and other features.
A sheet was added to the same document by clicking the + button on the worksheet. The sheets where named activity 1 and 2

The instructions guided me in creating a grade book and the including averages for every student as shown above.

A third assignment was completed on creating a personal grade book in excel and adding our own style to our excel sheet.

Challenges:
This week I faced one challenge. When the first assignment was given to label the excel sheet by teacher Fagan; because of my device limitations it was difficult to see the entire assignment. I had to then change the screen setting to print layout to try and get an accurate picture of the entire work.

What have I learnt?
This week was very interesting. In all my one year and 5 months of teaching I have never thought of using excel as a easy way to keep record of grades. The calculation of averages came in so sweet and easy and I would definitely use this tool in the classroom for more effective, faster way of grading.

Thanks for Reading. Stay tuned for more Blogs!!!!!
